7 Things God Wants Me to Know About Him

Exodus 3

I. God wants me to Know his

Exodus 3:1-3

Theophany’s:

In the Old Testament: When God appears in any form = Theophany. Theophany simply means: Appearance of God. When God makes himself visible. He doesn’t just send an angel or send fire down; these are times he actually show up.

Examples:

  • Thunderstorm. (Job 40:6)
  • A cloud.
  • Glory, Brightness.
  • Court Theophanies. (When God is seen by humans enthroned)
  • As a man: God created man “in the image of God”
  • Fire. (Burning Bush, Ex. 3:2)

God’s presence is often accompanied by fire:

Nicholas Perrin calls Fire a “Divine Calling Card.”

  • Ex. 13:21: God lead Israel by pillar fire.
  • 1 Kings 18: Elijah called to God, and he came down on Mt. Carmel in fire. 1 Kings 18:38: Then the fire of YHWH fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.
  • Our God comes and will not be silent; a fire devours before him, and around him a tempest rages.”
  • Ps 97:3: Fire goes before him and consumes his foes on every side.
  • Dan 7:9: says he saw the throne of God, “flaming with fire.”
  • NT: Acts, Holy Spirit comes down, comes Tongues FIRE.

Why FIRE? Very being of God is fearsome. Awesome.

VII. God wants me Know His

Exodus 3:12-15

  • Jesus defines God. (John 8:58)
  • Jesus is “consubstantial” = true God from true God. Of the same essence as God. Same substance as the father.
  • Jesus is the “Ultimate Theophany.” The incarnation creates a “Permanent Theophany.” God doesn’t have to appear in stuff/as things on earth. He appeared in the Son. Remains.

How did Paul know so much about Jesus/Resurrection?

Gal. 1:15 But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and who called me by his grace, 16 was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult with anyone;17 nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia, and returned again to Damascus.

2. What kinds of assignments does God give us?

What are some things God clearly told you to do?

Do you ever not like something God told you to do?

3. How have you grown in your knowledge of God’s personality?

Did you used to think God was one way, but over time learned God was actually different than you thought he was?

4. What are some things God told Moses to do?

5. Why do you think God chose Moses?

6. Read Exodus 4:1-9:

–Who was Moses afraid would not listen to him?

–Why do you think God turned Moses’ staff into a serpent?

–Why did God tell Moses to grab the serpent by its tail?

–Why did God use leprosy and then healing as a sign he had sent Moses?

7. Read Exodus 4:10-17:
