FAITH THAT OVERCOMES 3: Unity – Looking Through God’s Eyes

September 17, 2023

James 2:1-4 NIV
1 My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism. 2 Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in. 3 If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,” 4 have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?

James 1:1 NIV
1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes scattered among the nations: Greetings.

Favoritism affects what you see.

Favoritism affects what you see
.—————
What do you see?

Romans 2:11 NIV
11 For God does not show favoritism.

Acts 10:34 NIV
34 Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism

Where is your favoritism?

1 Samuel 16:7 NIV
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

Man sees the outward, but God sees the inward.

If we’re gonna deal with the problem of favoritism, we have to change how we see.

What we see affects what we say.

The miracle you need might be in a package that you are least attracted to.

Matthew 18:19-21 NIV
19 “Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” 21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?”

What do you see?
What do you say?
What do we do?

James 2:8-13 NIV
8 If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing right. 9 But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers. 10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. 11 For he who said, “You shall not commit adultery,” also said, “You shall not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker. 12 Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom, 13 because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

God’s love finds a way, where the world can’t find a way

What do you see?
What do you say?
What do we do?

James 2:17 NIV
17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

People knowing what we believe, is not nearly as strong as people seeing what we do.
