RELATIONSHIP KEYS Part 3: Overcoming Communication Blockers

August 21, 2022

Overcoming Communication Blockers

Communication is not what you say, it’s what they heard and think you said.

Miscommunication – failure to communicate adequately or properly

The right thing at the wrong time is the wrong thing

Proverbs 25:11 MSG
11 The right word at the right time is like a custom-made piece of jewelry, And a wise friend’s timely reprimand is like a gold ring slipped on your finger.

Blocks to Healthy Communication
Hunger
Tired
Mind reading
Passive aggressive behavior
Using aggressive speech

Colossians 4:6 NLT
6 Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone.

Ephesians 4:29 NLT
29 Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.

Ephesians 4:31-32 NLT
31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. 32 Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.

Most effective way to communicate is setting an atmosphere of AWE.

Affection

Genesis 1:27 NLT
27 So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

1 John 4:16 NLT
16 We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them.

Warmth

Encouragement

Colossians 3:12-15 NLT
12 Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. 13 Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. 14 Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.

Challenge:
1. Ask yourself: Do I clearly communicate to them that they are enough?
2. What things will you do this week to create an atmosphere of AWE in your relationships?
