The Gospel According to Mark

(Part 19)

Good Morning and Welcome to Jesus Church

Happy Father’s Day… real men come to church on Father’s Day – Amen?!

  • If you have your Bibles lets continue in our story… Mark 5
    • Last week we followed Jesus as he leaves the land of Jews
    • Heads into enemy territory on other side of Sea of Galilee
  • Jesus is establishing authority of his Kingdom everywhere he goes
    • While the demonic kingdom was ok with him claiming Jewish land
    • As soon as he is expanding to other places – instant resistance
      • First with the storm
      • Then with this demon possessed man in the graveyard
  • And how relatable is this…
    • When we start taking God’s kingdom to new places
    • Either physically to friends… family… work… school
    • Or spiritually to areas of our life we want to give God rule/reign
    • Instantly there is new resistance (think in your life…)

Shouldn’t surprise us – The enemy doesn’t want God’s Kingdom to grow

  • But how many of you know… the enemy doesn’t have to like it
    • But he has to deal with it
    • And he has to live with it
  • So Jesus takes authority over this area – held by a legion of demons
    • And Mark wants us to see a few key things moving forward

1) Fight isn’t against man/gov’t… demonic influence pulling the strings

  • God speaks to the demonic behind the storm and man

2) Jesus will disrupt your life… you choose to accept/reject that

  • 2000 pigs drowning in the sea would mess with the economy
  • So they reject Jesus for casting out this legion of demons
    • Because Jesus disrupts their lives
    • Everyone is cool with Jesus until you have to change something

3) Jesus calls this man to go back to “His people” to share the Gospel

  • This is a man with no training… Biblical knowledge
  • But he is equipped with what Jesus gave him
    • “Go tell how much God did for you and his grace towards you”

Today’s story is about a Dad doing anything 4 daughter

Mark 5:21-42

When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake. Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus came and when he saw Jesus, fell at his feet. He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.” So Jesus went with him. A large crowd followed and pressed around him.

And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for 12 years. She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.” Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering. At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?” You see the people crowding against you, his disciples answered, and yet you can ask “who touched me?” But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. He said to her, “Daughter your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”

While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher anymore?” Overhearing what they said, Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid, just believe.” He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James. When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. He went in and said to them, “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.” But they laughed at him. After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha Koum!” (which means, Little girl, I say to you get up!) Immediately the girl stood up and became to walk around (She was 23 years old). At this they were completely astonished.

I think what I love about this story

It’s about a dad who will do anything to help is little girl

  • Jesus and disciples have traveled back to Capernaum (headquarters)
    • Again stories and rumors of Jesus are catching like wildfire
    • The crowds love Jesus
    • The religious leaders already want to kill Jesus
  • In the town there is a religious center called a Synagogue
    • The priest of that synagogue was a guy named Jairus
    • Now Jairus would have been very close to other religious rulers
    • The ones who hate Jesus so much they want to kill him
  • As far as we know – Jairus isn’t a believer in Jesus at this point
    • But the problem is Jairus is a dad… and his little girl is sick
    • And however it started – This sickness is getting worse by the day

And its one thing if you are the Rabbi and visit other people when sick

  • But who do you turn to when your kid is sick
    • The doctors are telling him his daughter is dying
    • And Jairus was a powerful/influential/wealthy man
    • But none of that is gonna help his daughter get better
  • And Jairus would have turned to everyone… except Jesus
    • He no doubt hear the stories of Jesus healing the sick/demonic
    • But Jesus was off limits to a religious ruler… could destroy career
  • But funny how we do desperate things for those we love
    • And knowing his daughter could die at any time
    • He is thinking in his head… what about that Jesus guy

His daughters dying and like any dad… he’s gonna try anything

Mark 5:23

He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.”

  • Now notice how much faith Jairus has… probably not a believer yet
    • He is in the dirt begging Jesus to just come touch his daughter
    • Because He knows Jesus is his only hope
  • This man who is aligned with those who want to KILL JESUS
    • Probably has more faith than many Christians in our world today
    • Many believers in Jesus today don’t believe God can heal
      • But this Rabbi doesn’t care what others will think…
      • Doesn’t even care what he use to think…
      • Because THIS IS AN EMERGENCY!!!
  • And I don’t know what you are dealing with today… whatever it is
    • You know its in an emergency state – Need to bring it to the Lord
      • Lord… my family is in a state of emergency
      • Lord… my marriage is in a state of emergency
      • Lord… my mental health is in a state of emergency
    • You need to come to church not to check it off your list
      • Because this thing is about to bring death in your life
      • And you need to get on the floor before your God
      • And beg him to touch your life… for only he can heal you

Mark 5:24-28 (And Jesus says ok lets go)

So Jesus went with him. A large crowd followed and pressed around him. And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for 12 years. She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.”… [she touches the hem of his garment] He said to her, “Daughter your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”

Just like Jairus – This woman is desperate… but again there is great faith

  • Now based on the law – This woman shouldn’t even be here
    • The Levitical law would have said she couldn’t touch anyone
    • In fact she could have been stoned for what she was doing
    • But she had lost 12 years of her life
      • Couldn’t have a family
      • Couldn’t attend Synagogue
      • Her life has been stolen… and she needs a Savior
  • And one thing we know – Details are always important right???
    • She says “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed”
    • Where does that come from
    • And why does this tell Jesus that she has such great faith

Mal. 4:2 (talking about the Messiah)

But to you who fear my name the sun of righteousness shall arise with healing in his wings

The word wings – boarders… name for the edge/hem of a garment

  • She touched the hem not because it was the closest thing
    • This was a mob of people – If she was on the ground (trampled)
    • It was b/c she believed the scriptures… and this was the Messiah
    • And the promise was if you touch Messiah hem…it can heal you
  • And Jesus is touching hundreds of people on his way to Jairus house
    • Any many in this crowd would have been there for healing
    • But only one person in this crowd is touch Jesus by faith
  • There are thousands of people who gather on Sunday Mornings
    • All being around Jesus
    • But only a few reach out and touch him by faith
    • If you need Gods power to move in your life
      • Stop being around Jesus… start reaching out to Jesus

TAG: AND DO SOMETHING THAT DECLARES HIM MESSIAH IN YOUR LIFE

Now with this stop… imagine where Jairus’ head is at

Anyone else here hate waiting – We are a lot like Jairus

  • He could have gone to Jesus when his daughter only had a fever
    • He could have gone when she got too weak to get out of bed
    • Like many of us… he waits until everything has to happen now
  • Jairus became a slave to a timeline… b/c Jesus not 1st restort (last)
    • We have to stop making Jesus our last resort
    • When will we get it that Jesus is the only answer to our problem

But how this timeline… know what never works on Jesus: Human timeline

  • Because timelines put Jesus in a human box
    • And God will never fit in your box
    • Because you have plans… and then God has plans
  • Let me show you how much bigger God’s plans are than yours
    • This woman had this issue of blood for how many years (12)
    • How old is this little girl (12)
    • And on this day 12 years later Jesus saves them both
      • Why so that Jesus could be glorified
  • Sometimes there are issues in life just waiting for Jesus to be glorified
    • These people found Jesus – Lives forever changed
    • And God’s plan was 12 years in the making

TAG: Don’t ever put Jesus in a box

But that doesn’t mean it was easy for Jairus to wait

  • Jesus’ delay was not a denial for the miracle that was to come
    • So if ur waiting for God to move… doesn’t mean he won’t move
    • Just have FAITH in the waiting
  • Faith is the foundation everything is built on
    • It’s faith that moved Jesus to go see Jairus daughter
    • It’s faith that stopped Jesus in his tracks in the crowd
  • Faith gives perspective that Jesus is bigger than problem you face
    • That’s why we live/walk by faith
    • Put anything next to God… you see how small it really is
      • EVEN DEATH

Mark 5:35-36 (and this dad is about to need that perspective)

While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead, why bother the teacher anymore?” Overhearing what they said, Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”

Too often when fear hits… we lose perspective

And the reason we lose perspective – we back away from God

  • You see… Even death when next to God is nothing to fear
    • The issue comes when we turn on God because of our reality
    • Not GOD’S REALITY… but OUR REALITY
    • B/C we can no longer see how much bigger God is than the issue
  • You wanna know why divorce happens
    • We stop comparing how much bigger God is than marital problem
  • You wanna know why people fear cripples people
    • We stop comparing how much bigger God is than the unknown
  • You wanna know why people lose faith
    • They stop comparing how much bigger God is than their situation

Ever held on to that one last thing… and then you lose that too

  • You think there’s still time before I lose all hope
    • Its a race against time – B/C to Jairus time was determining factor
    • Should TIME BE THE DETERMINING FACTOR in your situation
    • Not when you have God walking towards your house
  • All hope for Jairus is gone… that’s why Jesus says don’t be afraid
    • Don’t lose that faith you had when you came to me
      • I can see you losing your perspective
      • Look at me… I’m right here
      • Death is only sleeping when I am in the room
    • Because I am the only factor that matters in your situation
      • Reason there was wailing and commotion
      • Moment someone died – Started digging the grave
      • These were the last moments they would see their little girl

Mark 5:40-42

After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha Koum!” (which means “Little girl, I say to you get up!)

Now notice there isn’t any special prayer… reciting of words

  • But Mark uses the Aramaic Phrase that Jesus uses for a reason
    • Talitha Koum would have been what a loving father would say
    • To his daughter when he woke her up in the morning
  • Jesus doesn’t see this as a girl who is dead – needs a resurrection
    • One because Jesus doesn’t look at death like we do
    • For believers (and children) death is only page 1 of the novel

And the reason Mark makes this so personal…

  • He wants you to see yourself in this story
    • Reason he points out woman suffering 12 years / girl 12 years old
    • Reason he calls the woman daughter / and this is Jairus daughter
      • Saying whether you’ve lived 12
      • Been a parent 12 years
      • Whether you’ve suffered 12 years
  • What matters is that God see’s you… He is moved by faith…
    • Which by the way isn’t always your faith
    • Jairus had faith for his girl – never stop praying for those you love

And last as we wrap up

This is a story of faith in the waiting…

  • Whether on the way to Jiarus house/12 years waiting to be healed
    • And as much as we want to fast forward to the outcome
    • Need 2 see life more as story being written > movie 2 be watched
  • Because when you watch a movie – Just waiting for things to happen
    • Come on… get to the good part
    • You can fast forward
  • But a story being written is full of character development
    • There’s a richness in the process
    • There’s growth… there’s intentionality

Heb 12:2 (its why Hebrews 12:2 says we are)

Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith…

  • If your little girl (whatever that means in your life) on edge of death
    • Trust that God is writing a story of salvation
    • Your role in that story is to have faith
  • And faith isn’t easy in the emergency…
    • Jairus must have been losing his mind… same as Martha/Lazarus
    • In verse 34 – “Daughter your faith has healed you” – SOZO
      • That word used 106 times in NT
      • Its translated SAVED / HEALED / MADE WHOLE / DELIVERED
  • Its the concept of salvation – Means Jesus SOZO is all encompassing
    • We see salvation in one corner…
      • Healing/wholeness/deliverance in the other
      • But Jesus wants every corner of your life
      • And he cares about every aspect of your life
    • In Scripture salvation is used in past/present/future
      • You are saved
      • You are being saved
      • You will be saved
  • This is why things like healing is so interesting in our faith
    • If ur a follower of Jesus: You will be healed (only matter of time)
      • That might happen here in present or the presence of Jesus
      • But healing will happen for you
    • But also all healing in this life is temporary
      • Best case scenario cancer is gone – Death still on the table
      • So you were saved!!! But we still wait on salvation
      • For ourselves… for those we pray for… and the world itself0

Again – Don’t limit God for there isn’t a box that can hold him

  • And give him everything – Not just your concept of salvation
    • Let him heal you… deliver you… and make you whole this morning
    • And like Jesus tells Jairus – Don’t fear… just have faith
    • Even when your last thread of hope is broken… God is still God
