(Part 8)

Good morning and welcome to Jesus Church

In the middle of a series on Freedom in Christ

• We believe as the Bible teaches that there is darkness in our world
  • That darkness would love to destroy your life
  • We know Jesus says the enemy comes for you
  • And he wants to kill/steal/destroy
• And if you let him into your life – Jesus says this is possible
  • He will wreak havoc on you/spouse/kids/friends/finances
  • And you’ll see things fall apart
  • And will believe anything accept it is because of what you let in

Last 3 weeks we’ve gone through 1 Jn 2

1 John 2:16

For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life, is not of the Father but is of the world.

• Satan will use all three of these things that are of the world
  • Last week we looked specifically at the Lust of the Flesh
  • This is all about emotional desires that lead to death
• In Prov. 6 there is a story that shows how this will seduce you
  • The Spirit of lust will take your curiosity and draw you in
    • It will tell you it isn’t a big deal
    • It will tell you won’t get caught
    • It will tell you God will be fine with it
• Prov. 6: Solomon is watching a young man lured in by this spirit
  • Sobering line… “he did not know it would cost him his life”
  • And this spirit will take your life as well… maybe not physical
  • But your spiritual life – family life – successful life

Now last week I promised things are gonna get lighter

• And that’s not because I’m letting up or anything like that
  • Its just that we are finally done climbing the mountain
  • It’s time to gain some perspective from our elevation
• And here’s what makes me excited
  • Know we’re hearing from God – Obedient to teach difficult stuff
  • Know we are carrying out His plan
  • Building a foundation that cannot be shaken
    • Which will produces fruit in form of
      • People saved
      • Lives changed
      • Leaders developed
      • God glorified
• This is what we will see… and only because we are listening to God

Story

Last week told story of when dating Michelle (flip – landed on my head)

• Gonna tell another story
  • Must be getting nostalgic… maybe turning 42 does that
  • Also coming up on 17 year wedding anniversary in 2 weeks
• I’ll watch a movie with Michelle
  • Not because I want to see them
  • But I know she does
• Saw movie called “Sisterhood of traveling pants”
  • I am not an emotional person (explain more later)
  • Watching movie… for some reason I start getting chocked up
    • Michelle sees this – I’m sorta embarrased
    • But what the heck… My wife see’s I can be sensitive
      • In touch with my feelings
        • Nope, just made fun of me
        • Never has let me forget (got me pants once)

Emotional Healing

(That story didn’t cause me to need it)

Luke 4:16-21

So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place

• Funny that they say he found
  • I wonder how long it takes Jesus to find Isaiah
  • Like table of contents… I doubt it

He found the place where it was written:

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”

Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him.

• Eyes fixed on him: They knew this was about the coming messiah
  • Wondering what he would read
  • And this is what he goes to

And He began to say to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilling in your hearing (In other words: I’m Him)

In this passage are 5 foundational ministries of Jesus

• Only going to talk about emotional healing
  • Want you to see all of them just so you know
  • All 5 Jesus wants to do in every one of our lives

1 – Salvation: 2 phrases Jesus uses to describe this ministry

• • • • Preach the Gospel
      • Proclaim acceptable year of the Lord
        • Meaning – Now you can accept Him & Him accept you

2 – Spirit Baptism: Jesus says Spirit of the Lord is upon me (Holy Spirit)

• • • • And He has anointed me
      • So we need to be anointed by the Holy Spirit

3 – Healing: Recovery of sight to the blind – You will be saved (sozo)

4 – Deliverance: Proclaim liberty to the captives

5 – Emotional Healing

• • • Heal the broken hearted
    • Set at liberty those who are oppressed
      • (KJV) Oppressed – Bruised

Broken Hearts and Bruises

Last week: Strongholds

• Where does your mind goes to find safety & comfort
  • You will run to either THEE stronghold (GOD)
  • Or a stronghold that substitutes God (ENEMY)
• 2 specific strongholds enemy wants you to run to
  • Identify and be set free this morning
  • One when you have a broken heart
  • One when you have a bruise

Broken Hearts (2 words in the Greek)

Soontribo: To break in pieces, to shatter

• Throwing jar down with no chance of fixing it

Kardia: Cardiac

• Heart/Will/Passion/Understanding/Purpose
  • All that is part of the heart

• Here’s the good news
  • There is someone who can repair it & put it back together
  • His name is Jesus
    • He never fails
    • So You Don’t have to live with a broken heart
• Many strongholds come from broken hearts

Main one: Rejection

• Heart broken over
  • Loss a parent or child
  • Relationship
  • Friendship
  • Loss a promotion
  • House you’ve wanted
• You feel shattered over that… rejection comes in
  • Want you to notice what happens when rejection comes in
  • Also know we are susceptible to rejection
• Theological: We are born rejected (born with a sinful nature)
  • Holy God can’t have relationship with us
    • Unless Jesus covers our sins
    • Only comes through relationship with Him

So we are easily effected by rejection

Num. 14:34

According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, forty days, for each day you shall bear your guilt one year, namely forty years, and you shall know my rejection.

• God talking to Israel: You rejected me
  • So I will remind you of what my rejection feels like
  • And notice what happens when we reject God

Hosea 8:3

Israel has rejected the good; the enemy will pursue him.

• Now we’re talking about Strongholds
  • God saying because you have rejected my way
  • You are going to run to the enemy
  • He has a door open waiting for you

Want you to see 7 strongholds from root of rejection

(Emotional Strongholds – Not personalities disorders)

1. Anger – Outburst of anger

• If you have a rage that they can’t control
  • The root of that comes from rejection
• Growing up I had great parents (Dad got sick)
  • I had a loss of a parent at times (comfort)
  • That broken heartedness led to this spirit of anger
    • Punch holes in doors and walls
    • I ended up with the Holiest room in the house
• Anger: You feel like you have Superhuman strength (Hulk)
  • Hulk would say: “You don’t want to see me angry”
  • This spirit will control you
    • Make me do things you should do
    • But in the moment I’d feel comfort
    • It would be followed by remorse
• Spirit of Anger from Spirit of Rejection

Example

1 Sam. 15:26

But Samuel said to Saul, I will not return with you, for you have rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you from being king over Israel.

What happens next…

1 Sam. 19:9-10

Now the distressing (evil – explain why later) spirit from the Lord came upon Saul as he sat in his house with his spear in his hand. And David was playing music with his hand. Then Saul sought to pin David to the wall with the spear, but he slipped away from Saul’s presence; and he drove the spear into the wall. So David fled and escaped that night.

• Saul rejected God… so God allows that and rejects Saul
  • Opened the door to evil spirit
    • Uncontrollable anger
    • Tried to murder someone
  • If you have this anger… could be a spirit from rejection

2. Insecurity – Constantly need attention

• Have to sit somewhere to be noticed – Constantly on Social Media
  • Have to be recognized… if someone else is recognized
  • They can’t handle it
    • Spirit you need to be freed from

3. Pride – People portraying themselves having all together

• Pride people talk a lot… have to give their opinion on everything
  • Have to answer every question
  • Think everything proves their point
  • And they think they always know the most in the room
• Fun preaching and seeing people
  • Spouse turning during message

4. Independence – I don’t need anyone

• These people don’t listen to council
  • Do what they want no matter what
  • And they only seek out advice from those they know will agree

5. Easily Offended – Take everything too personally

• Can’t joke with these people
  • So easily hurt
  • You can say something not even referencing them
  • They’ll get hurt because the assume you are talking about them

6-7. Control & Manipulation (Go together)

• Every person with these two bondages has spirit of rejection
  • Manipulators want to control people
    • So they can’t reject you… so hurt from rejection
    • Control everything so they cannot be rejected again
• This is not an excuse for behavior… we all have a choice
  • But you also have to choose to walk out of the prison
    • But rejection is the root
    • And if you know it, you can fight it
• People with spirit of control/manipulation interrupt a lot
  • They have to have control of the conversation
    • Especially in confrontation (it’s a trigger)
    • They’ll try and turn it back on you… can’t focus on them
    • (Story) Friend tried to turn in on other people all the time
  • Because they don’t want to deal with the hurt
    • Hurt people hurt people
    • Until they deal they are under this spirit
    • So wounded they’ll do anything not to look at themselves
• They intimidate you… don’t want you to talk
  • Ever delt with a school bully – Probably tons of rejection
    • Because these are hurt people
• Through pity… They know they are gonna be confronted
  • Start talking about how hard life is
    • SAYING: Don’t add one more thing
    • Control and manipulate conversation

TAG: Jesus came to heal us of this broken heart – 2^nd one is bruises

Bruises – Could put “Jesus Heals” before both points

Set at liberty those who are bruised – Bruises are inward bleeding

• Notice it says: Set at liberty (so bruises can hold you in bondage)
  • That means a bruise can hold you in bondage
  • Bruise means to be Crushed… and like the last question
• Have you ever been crushed
  • Betrayal… abandonment… disappointment… loss of family
  • And if you aren’t watching the enemy will use it as a window

One place we run to is a stronghold: Unforgiveness

Matt. 18

Peter asks how often should I forgive a brother who sins against me?

• Jesus says 70 x 7
  • Then he tells a story of a man who has a debt
  • That debt today would be around 52 million dollars
• Master has mercy and forgives debt
  • Talking about salvation
  • This is a believer
• Saved person finds someone that owes him 44 dollars
  • Threw his into prison
  • Jesus says: What will master say about this?

Matt. 18:32-34

Then his master after he had called him, said to him, You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me. Should you not also have had compassion on your fellow servant, just as I had pity on you? And his master was angry and delivered him to the torturers (tormentor) until he should pay all that was due to him.

Verse 35 (Now watch what Jesus says after the story)

So my heavenly father also will do to you if each of you, from his heart does not forgive his brother his trespasses.

• What does heavenly father do… turn you over to torturers
  • Remember: God sent an evil spirit to Saul (tormenting)

1 Cor 5

Man living in sin – Paul says turn him over to Satan for the destruction of flesh that his spirit might be saved.

Why would God do this… Think again about Israel rejecting God

• God would turn them over to their own bondage
  • Why: So they would run back 2 God… b/c bondage brings death
  • Remember – Strongholds are where you run to
    • So they would repent
    • So they would turn around
    • So they would be set free
• If you live in unforgiveness he will allow you to live in torment…
  • So you will learn to forgive
  • So you don’t live in the stronghold of the devil
  • So that you will repent
• Because you can’t be delivered until you repent

If you hold on to bad things, Bad things will hold on to you

James 4:7

Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

• You can’t resist the devil… until you submit to God
  • And you can’t submit if you don’t forgive
  • And you might think – THEY DON’T DESERVE FORGIVENESS
  • Maybe… but you deserve to be free of unforgiveness

1 Cor 5 – This man repents

2 Cor 2:11 – Forgive him now.. Lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices.

How Satan takes Advantage

• Holy Spirit is the comforter… Devil is the tormentor

2 Cor. 11:14 – Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.

Transforms (root) – Masquerades

• Satan puts on a mask
  • Pretends to be the comforter
  • He puts his arm around you
• Something happens… at home… at work
  • Stress/Fight/Depression/Discontent and Satan says…
    • This substance will comfort you
    • These images will comfort you
    • This man or woman will comfort you
• If we agree with Him… we open the window for him to come in
  • And he has legal right to be there
  • Because you invited him in
  • And the Façade of comfort becomes torment
• And until wound is healed… they don’t have to go anywhere
  • You can pray all you want
  • Until God is your stronghold
  • They won’t leave

[Close eyes – Stand]

Something is going to happen in emotional healing

• I will ask Holy Spirit to bring memories to mind
  • That he wants to heal today
    • Something when you were young
    • Maybe verbal abuse
    • Maybe physical abuse
    • Maybe sexual abuse
      • With a parent
      • With a friend
      • With a spouse
        • Something you did (ashamed)
        • Forgive ourselves

Holy Spirit I pray right now for every person here this morning. Bring memories to our minds that you want to heal today.

Hurt or pain that you feel – It will leave you in a moment

Might have a memory – Won’t have the pain

Time to cast any spirit out that’s holding you in bondage

Everyone repeat after me – out loud

(submit to God – He will heal us)

[Corp. Prayer]

Father, I submit these memories to you

I ask you to heal me now

From all the stress

And give me holy forgetfulness

I chose now by and act of my will

To forgive, To forget

And to be healed

In Jesus name

[Prayer]

Command all stress and pain and fear related to these memories to be cast out in Jesus name.

That our train of thought would be to run to you.

Every spirit attached to go right now. Anger, fear, hate, anxiousness, manipulation, lust, rejection. Heal our souls, broken hearted and bruised
