Made New
New Obligations– Romans 8:12-14
Sunday, January 18, 2026
Pastor Mike Bailey
Introduction
The Apostle Paul reminds us that in Christ we are no longer condemned, controlled by sin, or driven by fear. Instead, we are given new life, led by the Spirit, and empowered to live in a way that pleases God. Over four weeks—New Life, New Control, New Obligations, and New Attitude—we will discover what it means to walk in freedom, replace fear with hope, and live confidently as God’s sons and daughters. This new year don’t just try harder—be Made New.
January 4 – New Life – Romans 8:1-4

New Obligations
Romans 8:12-14
1. New obligations mean new . (Romans 8:12)
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8
For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7
Notes:
2. New obligations mean new . (Romans 8:13a)
2 And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on him— the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. 3 He will delight in obeying the Lord. He will not judge by appearance nor make a decision based on hearsay. Isaiah 11:2-3
For God called you to do good, even if it means suffering, just as Christ suffered for you. He is your example, and you must follow in his steps. 1 Peter 2:21
Notes:
3. New obligations mean a new . (Romans 8:13b)
19 When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, 21 envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God. 22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. 25 Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives. 26 Let us not become conceited, or provoke one another, or be jealous of one another. Galatians 5:19-26
Notes:
4. New obligations mean a new . (Romans 8:14)
See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are! But the people who belong to this world don’t recognize that we are God’s children because they don’t know him. 1 John 3:1
Notes:
Challenge: How are my current obligations and priorities distracting me from God’s purpose in my life?
It’s your sins that have cut you off from God. Isaiah 59:2a
For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Romans 3:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23
If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9
Growth Challenge: This week make two changes to your current obligations.
Read Romans 8:15-17 in preparation for next week’s message.
