The Greatest Sermon Ever Told

Judging – Matthew 7:1-6
Sunday, July 27, 2025
Pastoral Intern James Pryor

Introduction

The greatest sermon ever told was not preached by a celebrity pastor or even a famous prophet. It was not given from a stage or in a convention center. It was given from a hillside with standing room only. The speaker was not paid for his time, nor was the event promoted, yet thousands were in attendance. This man ultimately paid for his words with his own life and became the most influential religious leader in all of history. This is a sermon worth hearing and this is the message we all need.

Judging

Matthew 7:1-6

1. We do not judge others because we are judges. (1-2)

You may think you can condemn such people, but you are just as bad, and you have no excuse! When you say they are wicked and should be punished, you are condemning yourself, for you who judge others do these very same things. Romans 2:1

There will be no mercy for those who have not shown mercy to others. But if you have been merciful, God will be merciful when he judges you. James 2:13

“God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy.” Matthew 5:7  Matthew 18:21-35

Notes:

2. We must ourselves in order to help others. (3-5)

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life. Psalm 139:23-24

Instead, let us test and examine our ways. Let us turn back to the Lord. Lamentations 3:40  Luke 8:9-14

Notes:

3. We must be with who we help. (6)

16 “Look, I am sending you out as sheep among wolves. So be as shrewd as snakes and harmless as doves. 17 But beware! For you will be handed over to the courts and will be flogged with whips in the synagogues.”  Matthew 10:16-17

7 Anyone who rebukes a mocker will get an insult in return. Anyone who corrects the wicked will get hurt. 8 So don’t bother correcting mockers; they will only hate you. But correct the wise, and they will love you. Proverbs 9:7-8

4 Don’t answer the foolish arguments of fools, or you will become as foolish as they are. 5 Be sure to answer the foolish arguments of fools, or they will become wise in their own estimation. Proverbs 26:4-5

Notes:

Challenge: What log should I remove from my eye so that I can see clearly to help others?

God delights in being merciful.

Where is another God like you, who pardons the guilt of the remnant, overlooking the sins of his special people? You will not stay angry with your people forever, because you delight in showing unfailing love. Micah 7:18

Everyone will face God’s judgement.

For we must all stand before Christ to be judged. We will each receive whatever we deserve for the good or evil we have done in this earthly body. 2 Corinthians 5:10

And just as each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment… Hebrews 9:27

Your sins are forgiven when you repent.

But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. 1 John 1:9
