Eternal Return on Generosity

Gospel Light Church – The Investment of a Lifetime – October 12th, 2025 

“The Investment of a Lifetime:

Eternal Return on Generosity”

True generosity is not about loss, but lasting gain.

Matthew 6:19-21 ESV

1. The Temporary Nature of Earthly Treasure (v.19)

Jesus begins with a warning: “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth”

Jesus says: wealth here decays. Moths eat fine clothes. Rust corrodes metal. Thieves break through walls made of clay and steal valuables. In other words, everything on earth is vulnerable. 

Ecclesiastes 5:10 ESV

Even if you get more, you never have enough. Its fleeting. 

Wealth isn’t evil, but it is temporary. Do not build your identity, joy, security, around what cannot last. Houses rot, cars rust, accounts crash, and trends fade, but God’s Kingdom endures forever.

2. The Security of Heavenly Treasure (v.20)

Jesus continues, “But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven”

Notice the shift? He doesn’t say, “Don’t lay up for yourself treasure”, but store it up in the right place. Heavenly treasure is anything invested into God’s purposes — Supporting the Gospel, feeding the poor, sending missionaries, showing compassion, giving generously. 

These are Kingdom investments that never depreciate

Every time you give to God’s work — If it’s tithing, serving, or sacrificing — you’re transferring fund into heaven’s account. You’re sending it ahead to a place where moths cannot destroy, markets can’s crash and thieves can’t steal.

When you help a missionary preach the gospel, when you fund a Bible translation, when you feed the hungry, or support your local church — you are laying bricks in a city whose builder and maker is God

3. The Direction of The Heart (v.21)

Jesus finishes with the principle: “for where your treasure is, there your heart is also.”

If you invest your money into something you’ve never cared about — say crypto or bitcoin — you suddenly start watching the prices. Why? Because your money is there. Likewise, if you start giving toward missions, your heart will start following the missionaries.

If you want a heart for missions, give to missions. 

If you want a heart for the poor, give to the poor.

If you want your heart to be anchored in eternity, start investing there. 

Our giving reveals our loyalty. Jesus doesn’t need our money — He wants our hearts. But He knows the surest way to get our hearts is to guide where we give.

So What??? 

Generosity isn’t about subtraction; it is about multiplication in eternity. 

The world says, “Keep more, and you’ll have more.” Jesus says, “Give more and you’ll gain what can never be taken away.”

Every act of generosity is an eternal investment. Every time you give, you declare, “my hope is not in this world but in the world to come”
