The Names of God

Part 6: Jehovah Nissi

November 26, 2023

(Isaiah 52:6 NLT) I will reveal my name to my people, and they will come to know its power.

Jehovah Nissi: The Lord

Exodus 17:7(NIV) And he called the place Massah and Meribah because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”

Exodus 17:8 (NLT) While the people of Israel were still at Rephidim, the warriors of Amalek attacked them.

Exodus 17:9 (NLT) Moses commanded Joshua, “Choose some men to go out and fight the army of Amalek for us. Tomorrow, I will stand at the top of the hill, holding the staff of God in my hand.”

Exodus 17:10-11(NLT) So Joshua did what Moses had commanded and fought the army of Amalek. Meanwhile, Moses, Aaron, and Hur climbed to the top of a nearby hill. As long as Moses held up the staff in his hand, the Israelites had the advantage. But whenever he dropped his hand, the Amalekites gained the advantage.

Exodus 17:12-13 (NIV) When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset. So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword.

The Battle

Psalm 60:4 (NLT) But you have raised a banner for those who fear you— a rallying point in the face of attack

Exodus 17:14-16 (NIV) – Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot out the name of Amalek from under heaven.” Moses built an altar and called it The Lord is my Banner. He said, “Because hands were lifted up against the throne of the Lord, the Lord will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation.”

Malachi 1:3 (NIV) – but Esau I have hated, and I have turned his hill country into a wasteland and left his inheritance to the desert jackals.”

John 10:10 (ESV) – The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Ephesians 6:11-12 (NLT) – Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.
