The Names of God

Part 3: Jehovah Jireh

November 5, 2023

(Isaiah 52:6 NLT) I will reveal my name to my people, and they will come to know its power.

Jehovah Jireh: The Lord

(Genesis 22:1-2 NIV) Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.”

This story was never about God trying to get

Abraham to kill . This was about God trying

to get Abraham to kill .

(Joshua 24:2 NIV) Joshua said to all the people, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Long ago your ancestors, including Terah the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the Euphrates River and worshipedother gods.

Idols

Anything more important to you than God.

Anything that absorbs your heart and imagination more than God.

Anything you seek to give you what only God can give.

Identifying Idols
  • What occupies your mind when you have nothing to think about?
  • What do you habitually think about which gives you comfort, confidence, and strength?
  • Where do you spend your time and money?
  • What are you the most afraid of?

When God Asks You to Sacrifice What You Love
  1. Follow God .

A lot of what we’re struggling with

is simply delayed obedience.

(Psalm 119:60 GNT) Without delay I hurry to obey your commands.

(Genesis 22:3-5) Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about… He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.”

  1. Follow God .

(Psalm 119:4 NCV) LORD, you gave your orders to be obeyed completely.

(James 4:11 TLB) Your job is not to decide whether this law is right or wrong, but to obey it.

(Genesis 22:7-8 NIV) Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?” “Yes, my son?” Abraham replied. “The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together.

(Hebrews 11:17-19 NLT) It was by faith that Abraham offered Isaac as a sacrifice when God was testing him. Abraham, who had received God’s promises, was ready to sacrifice his only son, Isaac, even though God had told him, “Isaac is the son through whom your descendants will be counted.” Abraham reasoned that if Isaac died, God was able to bring him back to life again. And in a sense, Abraham did receive his son back from the dead.

(Genesis 22:11-12 NIV) But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.”

  1. Follow God .

Delayed obedience is disobedience.

Partial obedience is disobedience.

Resentful obedience is disobedience.

(Genesis 22:13-14 NIV) Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide [Jehovah Jireh]. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.”

Jireh means .

(Jeremiah 17:10 NIV) I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.”

(Genesis 22:15-18 NIV) The angel of the Lord called to Abraham from heaven a second time and said, “I swear by myself, declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, and through your offspring, all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.”
