1 JOHN Part 1: Real Life

The Big Idea

What does look like?

(1 John 5:13 NIV) I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

Theme 1: God is : The Test of True

(1 John 1:5 – 1 John 2:29)

Theme 2: God is : The Test of True

(1 John 3-5)

(1 John 1:1-4 NLT) 1 We proclaim to you the one who existed from the beginning, whom we have heard and seen. We saw him with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands. He is the Word of life. 2 This one who is life itself was revealed to us, and we have seen him. And now we testify and proclaim to you that he is the one who is eternal life. He was with the Father, and then he was revealed to us. 3 We proclaim to you what we ourselves have actually seen and heard so that you may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. 4 We are writing these things so that you may fully share our joy.

Real Life

  • This life is .

(1 John 1:1-2 NKJV) ..concerning the Word of life—the life was manifested..

(1 John 1:4:2-3 NIV) This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God.

(1 John 2:22 NIV) No one who denies the Son has the Father.

  • This life is .

(John 3:7 NIV) You must be born again.

(John 6:63) The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

  • This life is .

(1 John 1:3 NIV) That which we have seen and heard we declare to you…

5 Reasons for Writing 1 John

1. That you may have .

(1 John 1:3 NIV) We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.

(2 Peter 1:3-4 ESV) His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.

2. That you may have .

(1 John 1:4 NLT) We are writing these things so that you may fully share our joy.

(John 15:7,11 NIV) If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you…I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.

3. That you may not .

(1 John 2:1 NIV) My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.

4. That you may not .

(1 John 2:26 ESV) I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you.

(1 John 1:8 NIV) If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

5. That you may know .

(1 John 5:13 MSG) My purpose in writing is simply this: that you who believe in God’s Son will know beyond the shadow of a doubt that you have eternal life, the reality and not the illusion.
