The Dangers of a 2-Dimensional Life

  1. Shallow Relationships
  2. Surface-Level Living
  3. No Eternal Perspective

John 10:10a (NKJV)

The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy.

  • Presence is precious. When it’s stolen, we lose more than we realize.

  • Spiritually – We miss God’s whisper (1 Kings 19:12).

  • Relationally – We fail to see the image of God in those around us

  • Emotionally – We live in regret of yesterday or anxiety of tomorrow

  1. BUSYNESS: We live in a world that prizes speed—fast communication, instant results, next-day delivery.

  • NUMBNESS: DESENSITIZATION two ways desensitization works in our lives…

  • POSITIVE: It can protect us from pain and help us endure hardship. There are times when being “desensitized” can actually be a gift.

  • A Shield from Overreaction: God builds a holy resilience in us.

  • Strength to Face Fear: We become less sensitive to threats.

  • Endurance in Trials: Exposure to hardship builds spiritual muscle.

  • Filtering Out Distractions: We become desensitized to the world’s attraction to our souls.

  • NEGATIVE: It can dull our hearts to God, to sin, and other’s sufferings.

  • A Distracted Heart:

  • A Hardened Heart: When the heart is hardened, sin no longer stings.

  • Loss of Discernment: When we stop feeling, we stop seeing clearly. A desensitized heart can no longer tell what is truly good or evil.

LUKE 10:30-32 “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a priest was going down the same road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, when a Levite came to that spot and saw him, yet he passed by on the other side.

1. The Road of Brokenness (v.30) “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers.”

  • The Priest Who Passed By (v.31) “A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side.”

  • The Levite Who Looked and Left (v.32) “So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.”

KEY POINT: Both the priest and Levite were leaving Jerusalem…

3-D LIVING

John 10:10b (NKJV)

I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

JESUS MODELED BEING “”

John 1:14

“The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.”

  • Jesus Looked at Peter After His Denial

Luke 22:61

“The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: ‘Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.’”

  • Jesus Looked at the Rich Young Ruler

Mark 10:21

“Jesus looked at him and loved him.”

PERSONAL APPLICATION: A phrase that the Zulu people use whenever they greet each other…SAWUBONA – “I SEE YOU”

Genesis 16:13 (The name of God El Roi = The God Who Sees)

Psalm 139

“You have searched me, Lord, and you know me… You perceive my thoughts from afar… You are familiar with all my ways.”

Church, you are never unseen. God says to you…SAWUBONA.

We Are Called to See Others

Philippians 2:3–4

“In humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of others.”
