Head

• Work together as a group to describe and build a picture of the characters in this narrative. Matthew, Pharisees, disciples, Jesus. 
• When Matthew gets up and follows Jesus, what was he leaving behind? What are some of the consequences he might have faced?
• Why did the Pharisees make such a big deal about Jesus eating with sinners?
• What do you think Jesus meant when he said, “‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”?

• How do you personally relate to Matthew and the Pharisees in this narrative?
• How have you wrestled with a mercy attitude and a sacrifice attitude?
• When Jesus says he came not to call the righteous, but sinners, what about that statement resonates with you personally?
• Jesus doesn’t pick sides, he makes a way. How have you experienced Jesus making a way for you when you’re on a different side of him?

• Consider your family and neighbors. What is one thing you can say or do for each of them this week to show them mercy?
