The Kindness and Judgment of God

The Gospel According to Romans

Romans 2:1-16

Luke 5:32

“People are without excuse” (Romans 1:20)

“Although they knew God, they neither glorified Him as God nor gave thanks to Him” (Romans 1:21)

“Their thinking became futile” (Romans 1:21)

“Their foolish hearts were darkened” (Romans 1:21)

“They became fools” (Romans 1:22)

“God gave them over” (Romans 1:24)

“They exchanged the truth about God for a lie” (Romans 1:25)

“God gave them over” (Romans 1:26)
“God gave them over” (Romans 1:28)

There are two problems:

  • We don’t really understand God’s
  • We don’t really understand our

God is completely and perfectly and His judgment is .

  1. God’s judgment is (vv. 1-4)

No one will be saved without Christ.  One reason is that God’s judgment is according .

Why are we still alive?  !!

“The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.” 2 Peter 3:9

  1. God’s judgment is absolutely (vv. 5-11),

Psalm 62:12

Proverbs 24:12

At the final judgment, God’s holy character is the standard and your goodness will be compared .

  1. God’s judgment is (vv. 12-16)

Here’s what Paul is saying:

    • We all have a sense in our hearts that some actions are good, and others are bad.
    • One’s understanding of “good” may not be perfect.
    • Even by this imperfect standard, no one lives a righteous life.
    • No one has even perfectly obeyed his or her own conscience.
    • When we do something against our own conscience, we feel guilt.

Each individual will be judged according to their understanding of what is right and wrong. And whether it’s by the Law of Moses or one’s own conscience—each person will be found .

Matthew 7:1

1 Corinthians 5:3

So here are some questions for us to ask ourselves:

  • Are we guilty of being self-righteous and indifferent to the well-being of others?
  • Do we point out the sins of others and then show them no mercy?
  • Do we harbor feelings of superiority and use the wrongs of others to advance our own interests?
  • Are we guilty of deflecting attention from our own guilt by accusing others?

Matthew 7:2-5
