Unwrapping the Names of Jesus

Mighty God – Isaiah 9:6

Introduction

The Christmas season is one of celebration. Some celebrate gifts, lights, seasonal changes, family, and more. But the joy of Christmas for those who follow Jesus is much deeper: we get to celebrate Christ Himself! But do we understand why? As we hear and learn about Jesus’ many names in Scripture, maybe we can better understand just how worthy of celebration He is. This Christmas, let’s unwrap the names of Jesus.

Unwrapping the Names of Jesus:

December 4 – Wonderful Counselor – Isaiah 9:6

December 11 – Mighty God – Isaiah 9:6

December 18 – Everlasting Father – Isaiah 9:6

December 25 – Prince of Peace – Isaiah 9:6

For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6

Mighty God – [Hebrew] El gibbowr God is our hero.

1. God is .

…for through him God created everything in the heavenly realms and on earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see—such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world. Everything was created through him and for him. Colossians 1:16

“I know that You can do all things, And that no plan is impossible for You.” Job 42:2 (NASB)

2. God is .

1O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. 2You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. 3You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. 4You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord. 5You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. 6Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand! Psalm 139:1-6

3. God is .

7I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! 8If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there. 9If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, 10even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me. 11I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night— 12but even in darkness I cannot hide from you. To you the night shines as bright as day. Darkness and light are the same to you. Psalm 139:7-12

4. He is the source of our .

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8

5. He is the in our lives.

For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13

“For nothing will be impossible with God.” Luke 1:37 (ESV)

6. He is the security for our .

And through your faith, God is protecting you by his power until you receive this salvation, which is ready to be revealed on the last day for all to see. 1 Peter 1:5

Christ’s inimitable meekness and patience never once forsook Him in a vexatious, ungrateful, cruel sphere. He never stepped out of the humble sphere in which He was brought up; He does not seem to have ever possessed for Himself so much as the smallest coin, and when He died had no means for providing for His mother, and could only commend her to one of His disciples. Yet, His life was infinitely superior to all others. If Jesus were no more than a man or a hero, why are there not more men like Him? What God did for one man, God would certainly do for others. It is unaccountable that it has never been done. The incarnation, when Jesus came as “the Mighty God,” alone helps us to the solution of such an enigma. – J.B. Figgis

Closing: Who or what are you relying on for your future?

It’s sins that have cut you off from God. Isaiah 59:2a

For has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Romans 3:23

For the wages of sin is death, the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23

If openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9
