Advent – Joy “I’ve got the joy!”

We need joy but we seek after happiness. The world is selling happiness.

Happiness is an emotion in response to the current outcome.

Jesus offers something better than happiness. Jesus offers joy. Joy is spoken of many times in the New Testament and the common link in everything about joy is Jesus.

It starts at the birth announcement of Jesus; Luke 2:10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

John 15:9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

 John 16: 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. 21 When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.

I love how He just says that their sorrow, their disappointment, and their grief will be upended and turn into joy. At the resurrection of Jesus there will be joy, the kind of joy no one will be able to take away. Permanent joy. Abiding joy.

Again, Jesus and joy are connected

John 17:13 “I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them.

 Whose joy is it? It belongs to Jesus. And where is he going to put it? In us.

And so, if happiness is simply an emotional response to my current situation, what is joy?

Joy is a good feeling in the soul. It is a permeating gratitude and hopefulness that is rooted in the unchanging person of Jesus.

 We might just say that joy is a good feeling in the soul because we know that Jesus is up to something.

 Now, all joy is rooted in Jesus because he is the unchanging outcome in everything. The Bible in 1 Peter 2:6 calls Jesus “the cornerstone.”

1 Peter 2:6  For it stands in Scripture:

“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

The imagery of a cornerstone means that Jesus will never move

He will always stand

He will never falter

He will never crack up

He will hold everything up

He will never shift or move

He is solid and sure and unwavering and secure.

Joy is a good feeling in the soul. It is a permeating gratitude and hopefulness that is rooted in the unchanging person of Jesus.

JOY STEALERS…

Psalm 137:1 Beside the rivers of Babylon, we sat and wept as we thought of Jerusalem.
2 We put away our harps, hanging them on the branches of poplar trees.
3 For our captors demanded a song from us.
    Our tormentors insisted on a joyful hymn:
    “Sing us one of those songs of Jerusalem!”
4 But how can we sing the songs of the Lord
    while in a pagan land?

Have you hung your harp (and joy) on the branch of a tree?

• Maybe it is the grief tree.
• Maybe it is the gripe tree.
• Maybe it is the grudge tree.
• Maybe it is the wishing tree.
• Maybe it is the worry tree.
• Maybe it is the fear tree.
• Or the regret tree.

Psalm 100 Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!
2     Serve the Lord with gladness!
    Come into his presence with singing!

3 Know that the Lord, He is God!
    It is He who made us, and we are His;
    we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture.

4 Enter His gates with thanksgiving,
    and His courts with praise!
    Give thanks to Him; bless His name!

5 For the Lord is good;
    His steadfast love endures forever,
    and His faithfulness to all generations.

What is the root of such joy in this Psalm?

3 Know that the Lord, He is God!
    It is He who made us, and we are His;
    we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture.

It is that He is God and that He is good. That is the unchanging outcome. That is the cornerstone. He is God and He is good.

Six rules of joy…

1. I will walk with Jesus every day.
2. I will be grateful and live every day to the fullest.
3. I will bless my family with words, pictures and videos.
4. I will invest in my team for their good and God’s glory – not mine.
5. I will not give up and run out the clock.
6. I will let people love me.

Adviento – Alegría “¡Tengo la alegría!”

Necesitamos alegría, pero buscamos la felicidad. El mundo está vendiendo felicidad.

La felicidad es una emoción en respuesta al resultado actual.

Jesús ofrece algo mejor que la felicidad. Jesús ofrece alegría. El gozo se habla muchas veces en el Nuevo Testamento y el vínculo común en todo lo relacionado con el gozo es Jesús.

Comienza con el anuncio del nacimiento de Jesús; Lucas 2:10 Y el ángel les dijo: “No temáis, porque he aquí, os traigo buenas nuevas de gran gozo que serán para todo el pueblo. 11 Porque os ha nacido hoy en la ciudad de David un Salvador, que es Cristo el Señor.

Juan 15:9 Como el Padre me ha amado, así yo os he amado a vosotros. Permaneced en mi amor. 10 Si guardáis mis mandamientos, permaneceréis en mi amor, así como yo he guardado los mandamientos de mi Padre y permanecí en su amor. 11 Estas cosas os he hablado, para que mi gozo esté en vosotros, y vuestro gozo sea pleno.

Juan 16:20 De cierto, de cierto os digo que lloraréis y os lamentaros, pero el mundo se regocijará. Estarás triste, pero tu tristeza se convertirá en alegría. 21 Cuando una mujer está dando a luz, tiene tristeza porque ha llegado su hora, pero cuando ha dado a luz al bebé, ya no recuerda la angustia, por la alegría de que un ser humano haya nacido en el mundo. 22 Así también vosotros tenéis tristeza ahora, pero yo os veré de nuevo, y vuestros corazones se regocijarán, y nadie os quitará vuestro gozo.

Me encanta cómo Él acaba de decir que su dolor, su decepción y su dolor se volcarán y se convertirán en alegría. En la resurrección de Jesús habrá gozo, el tipo de gozo que nadie podrá quitar. Alegría permanente. Alegría permanente.

Una vez más, Jesús y el gozo están conectados

Juan 17:13 “Vengo a vosotros ahora, pero digo estas cosas estando todavía en el mundo, para que tengan toda la medida de mi gozo dentro de ellos.

¿De quién es la alegría? Pertenece a Jesús. ¿Y dónde lo va a poner? En nosotros.

Y así, si la felicidad es simplemente una respuesta emocional a mi situación actual, ¿qué es la alegría?

La alegría es un buen sentimiento en el alma. Es una gratitud y esperanza penetrantes que están arraigadas en la persona inmutable de Jesús.

Podríamos decir que el gozo es un buen sentimiento en el alma porque sabemos que Jesús está tramando algo.

Ahora, todo gozo está arraigado en Jesús porque él es el resultado inmutable en todo. La Biblia en 1 Pedro 2:6 llama a Jesús “la piedra angular”.

1 Pedro 2:6 Porque está en las Escrituras:

“He aquí, estoy poniendo en Sion una piedra, una piedra angular escogida y preciosa, y cualquiera que crea en él no será avergonzado”.

La imagen de una piedra angular significa que Jesús nunca se moverá

Él siempre estará de pie

Él nunca flaqueará

Nunca se romperá

Él sostendrá todo

Él nunca cambiará ni se moverá

Él es sólido y seguro e inquebrantable y seguro.

La alegría es un buen sentimiento en el alma. Es una gratitud y esperanza penetrantes que están arraigadas en la persona inmutable de Jesús.

LADRONES DE ALEGRÍAS…

Salmo 137:1 Junto a los ríos de Babilonia, nos sentamos y lloramos al pensar en Jerusalén. 2 Guardamos nuestras arpas, colgándolas en las ramas de los álamos.3 Porque nuestros captores nos exigieron una canción.    Nuestros torturadores insistieron en un himno alegre: “¡Cántanos una de esas canciones de Jerusalén!” 4 Pero, ¿cómo podemos cantar las canciones del Señor mientras estamos en una tierra pagana?

¿Has colgado tu arpa (y alegría) en la rama de un árbol?

• Tal vez sea el árbol del dolor.
• Tal vez sea el árbol de la gripe.
• Tal vez sea el árbol del rencor.
• Tal vez sea el árbol de los deseos.
• Tal vez sea el árbol de la preocupación.
• Tal vez sea el árbol del miedo.
• O el árbol del arrepentimiento.

Salmo 100 ¡Haz un ruido gozoso al Señor, a toda la tierra!2 ¡Sirve al Señor con alegría!    ¡Entra en su presencia cantando!

3 ¡Sabed que el Señor es Dios!    Es Él quien nos hizo, y nosotros somos Suyos;     somos Su pueblo, y las ovejas de Su pasto.

4 ¡Entra por sus puertas con acción de gracias, y por sus atrios con alabanza!    Dale gracias a Él; ¡bendice Su nombre!

5 Porque el Señor es bueno;    Su amor inquebrantable permanece para siempre, y Su fidelidad a todas las generaciones.

¿Cuál es la raíz de tal gozo en este Salmo?

3 ¡Sabed que el Señor es Dios!    Es Él quien nos hizo, y nosotros somos Suyos;     somos Su pueblo, y las ovejas de Su pasto.

5 Porque el Señor es bueno;    Su amor inquebrantable permanece para siempre, y Su fidelidad a todas las generaciones.

Es que Él es Dios y que Él es bueno. Ese es el resultado inmutable. Esa es la piedra angular. Él es Dios y Él es bueno.

Seis reglas de alegría…

1. Caminaré con Jesús todos los días.
2. Estaré agradecido y viviré cada día al máximo.
3. Bendeciré a mi familia con palabras, fotos y videos.
4. Invertiré en mi equipo para su bien y la gloria de Dios, no la mía.
5. No me rendiré y apagaré el reloj.
6. Dejaré que la gente me ame.

¡Veamos lo que Dios puede hacer!
