The ONE – A Study of 1 Peter: One Life

August 14, 2022

Introduction

The famous 1971 film Willy Wonka captured a cultural attitude with the words, “I want the world. I want the whole world. I want to lock it all up in my pocket, it’s my bar of chocolate. Give it to me now.” Over a decade later, the rock group Queen sang “I want it all, and I want it now!” We’ve always been looking for a quick and easy solution to the problems we face. Take a pill, get a drink, inhale, go into debt, find someone else, get a different job, and find a new church—we think these things will help us, but instead they leave us empty. The Bible gives us an answer to our pain and longing. What is our one hope, our one call, our one connection, our one chance? Let’s discover the solution together.

              1. A life that is for suffering (4:1-2)

So then, since Christ suffered physical pain, you must arm yourselves with the same attitude he had, and be ready to suffer, too. For if you have suffered physically for Christ, you have finished with sin. You won’t spend the rest of your lives chasing your own desires, but you will be anxious to do the will of God.

Notes:

           2. A life that is to sin (4:3-4)

You have had enough in the past of the evil things that godless people enjoy—their immorality and lust, their feasting and drunkenness and wild parties, and their terrible worship of idols. Of course, your former friends are surprised when you no longer plunge into the flood of wild and destructive things they do. So they slander you.

Notes:

           3. A life with the in view (4:5-7)

But remember that they will have to face God, who stands ready to judge everyone, both the living and the dead. That is why the Good News was preached to those who are now dead—so although they were destined to die like all people, they now live forever with God in the Spirit.  7 The end of the world is coming soon. Therefore, be earnest and disciplined in your prayers.

Notes:

           4: A life centered around (4:8-9)

Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins. Cheerfully share your home with those who need a meal or a place to stay.

Notes:

            5. A life that utilizes our gifts through (4:10)

10 God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.

Notes:

             6. A life that introduces others to the (4:11)

11 Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen.

Notes:

It’s your sins that have cut you off from Isaiah 59:2a

For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of glorious standard  Romans 3:23

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23

If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that raised him from the dead, you will be saved.  Romans 10:9

Closing: What are you doing with the you have?
