Calvary Baptist Church Red Bank Prayer That Makes a Difference Archived – November 12, 2023 View This Week’s Note View All Past Notes View This Note w/ Blanks Main Scripture Reference(s) Daniel 9:1-19, Prayer That Makes a Difference November 12, 2023 / Greg Powell / Daniel 9:1-19 We’ve been cruising along looking at some amazing prophecies in the book of Daniel, but things change gears in chapter 9. I have to tell you, this is one of the greatest prayers in the entire Bible. I think we all had safely assumed that Daniel was a man of prayer. To live the life he did, to live by conviction in a culture of compromise, he would have to be a man that walked and talked with God on a personal level. We are not going to make a difference in this world if we are not people of prayer! Let’s study this prayer of Daniel and see if it helps us have a prayer life that makes a difference. I. Pray from the of God. (1-2) Before he prayed, Daniel was carefully studying and he came across the number twice. Daniel was about to see the promises of God in his lifetime. Time spent in Scripture will your prayer life. John Piper said, “Where the mind isn’t with the Bible, the heart is not generally brimming with prayer.” II. Pray to be ushered into God’s . (3) Do we simply pray or do we seek the of God? One of the simplest reasons our prayers are not making a difference is that they are too . It’s going to take work in this fast-paced world, but maybe the missing secret to our prayer life is to just slow down and not seek for things, but seek for a . III. Pray humbly for . (4-16) This ranks right up there with Psalm 51 as one of the greatest come clean, remove the mask, passages in the entire Bible. Even though it wasn’t his sin that had caused Judah to go into captivity, Daniel understood that he was of that whole. So times in this prayer he associates himself with the people of Judah. We have a tendency to blame the non-Christians for all the problems in our country. But that’s not what the Bible says is the recipe for revival in 2 Chron. 7:14. Several times in Israel’s history, the of one person brought about the nation’s from judgment. IV. Pray to glorify God’s . (17-19) Discerning that the people are in no to return to Jerusalem and to the Lord, he fervently prays to God on behalf of his people. Most of our prayers have glory as the goal, not God’s. Because of the power of indwelling sin described in Romans 7, a Christian life is one of constant over sin and repentance from that sin. My greatest need today is for the Spirit of God to produce His and His in me.
