The hymn actually traces the life of Jesus from his pre-existence in eternity past, to His coming to earth to die on the cross, and His future reign. A few weeks ago, I realized that since we were already studying Philippians that this would make a great text for Easter, and I hope you’ll agree. It is the perfect song of victory, and that is why I had Laura design this image which illustrates how the passage forms a “V”, we might think of it as a “V” for Victory! You can see where it begins with the exaltation of Jesus in heaven, dips to the lowest point at His crucifixion, and then climbs upward to His eternal exaltation once again.
So, on this Easter Sunday, let’s focus on resurrection victory and what that means for Jesus Christ and all of humanity.
I. Jesus is given a divine . (9a)
II. Jesus is given a special . (9b)
III. Jesus is given a universal . (10-11)
