But nothing over the course of the last 2,000 years compares to the 6 trials of Jesus prior to His crucifixion. More people have read its transcripts than any other trial in human history. And the whole world is affected by the verdict. After Jesus had been analyzed by Annas (12-14) and Caiaphas (24), John picks up the story of Jesus being led before Pilate. I. Pilate’s (28-32) He was the of Judea and the 6th man to be in power since Rome took over. He lacked the necessary to be a good leader. The Jewish way of execution was typically – remember Stephen in Acts 7? But the Roman death penalty was by ! (Psalm 22:16) II. Pilate’s (33-38a) Pilate is a picture of humanity – , superstitious, and more than willing to talk about who Jesus is – just don’t get ! Jesus came to this earth the first time to tell the of God and do the of God and to offer the of God to the world and that meant He had to die and that meant He needed to be in this meeting with Pilate. This was a personal for Pilate to accept the true King. III. Pilate’s (38b-40) Jesus Christ is guilty of . There has never been anything that Jesus did or said that made Him guilty. There was a custom of appeasing the Jews by releasing one to them during Passover. are Barabbas, the guilty, going , with innocent Jesus taking our place! His blood is either on your hands (guilty) or His blood your heart (guilty, yet forgiven).
