Who they Knew Jesus was:
- He was a tested
- Recognition
- Jesus referred as Rabbi 47 times in the gospels
- Called Rabbi by Sanhedrin (Nicodemus), disciples, Pharisees, Priests
- Comparatively, Jesus was referenced in relation to a carpenter 2 times
- Both speak of the same event, and one calls him “son of carpenter” not a carpenter
- Context of the story is they are confused about who Jesus really is, and Jesus responds with “prophet without honor in his own home”-Mark 6:3; Matthew 13:55
- In Luke 5:1-11, Jesus uses Peter’s boat to teach from to a large crowd
- Jesus was suspected of being the Messiah
- Andrew introduced Peter to Jesus prior to this-John 1:40-42
- Ministry
- Rabbis would start their ministry at age 30: Luke 3:23
- Jesus preaching for days in the temple courts-Luke 21:37-38

Who the Disciples were:
- They were Men
- Yes, they were fisherman, but why were they fisherman?
*At some point, the disciples heard the phrase, “Son, you know Torah, but you cannot be my disciple. Learn a trade, keep Torah, and raise better men than yourself.”
- They believed themselves FAILURES and INSUFFICIENT
- They failed at schooling, but also apparently failed at fishing
- Luke 5:1-11- Peter falls on his knees and says, “Depart from me Lord, for I am a sinner.”
What the Disciples Heard
- When Jesus says, “Come and Follow Me,” he is using the ceremonial expression for a Rabbi to an accepted disciple
