PRAY FIRST | PART 2 – WHEN THE WORLD GOES CRAZY
Pastor Josh Rudolph
Mark 4:35-41 NIV That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
- Jesus told the disciples they were going to the other side.
- That is important– He didn’t say we’re going halfway and drowning. He said we’re going to the other side.
- The storm hits– the waves are crashing and the disciples are afraid.
- They finally wake him up and say, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”
Notice what the storm made them question.
- Not His power.
- His care.
- Do You not care?
That is what storms do. They do not only attack your circumstances. They attack your understanding of God. The storm may be loud, but Jesus has not lost His voice.
1. THE CHURCH CARRIES PEACE
- Peace is not the absence of a storm.
- Peace is the presence of Jesus in the boat.
2. PRAYER REMINDS US WHO IS IN CHARGE
- Prayer is not what we do when we have run out of options.
- Prayer is how we remember that God was available the entire time.
- Prayer does not make God bigger.
- Prayer reminds us that He was always bigger.
- Prayer reminds us that evil is real, but evil is not King.
Fear is real, but fear is not King. Grief is real, but grief is not King. Jesus is still King.
3. PRAYER SENDS US TOWARD THE PAIN
- Prayer is not an escape.
- Prayer is asking God to put heaven inside ordinary people and send them into hurting places.
We cannot become so committed to having church that we fail to be the Church.
4. LIGHT IS MOST VISIBLE IN DARKNESS
