A Cool Hand on a Hot Head

September 5, 2021 / 1 Samuel 25:

God used a wise and discerning woman to change the course of a confrontation that was headed for a disastrous end.

Abigail means “my father is joyous”

Nabal means “stupid or foolish”

  • People Will Hurt You
    • Some hurt because they have been hurt
    • Some hurt because they are jealous
    • Some hurt because they are just mean (that’s Nabal)
  • Why Such a Strong Reaction from David?
  • God Uses Abigail
    • She takes wise action
    • She speaks with wisdom

1 Samuel 25:26; 25:29

1 Samuel 25:30-31

1 Samuel 25:32-33

  • How Should We Respond to Difficult People?
    • Remember that people will hurt you at times
    • Remember that you also have sinful tendencies and sometimes lack wisdom

Proverbs 29:11

    • Be open to correction and rebuke from God’s Spirit, His Word, or through others
    • Choose to trust God and let Him defend you

Romans 12:19

This requires us, as believers, to see justice in light of the cross

      • Understand that you have been forgiven
      • Believe that the cross is God’s answer to all the injustice in this world
      • Trust that God knows what He is doing, even when we don’t.

Through this account, Abigail points us to Christ and what He would do for us.

  • We Need a Mediator
  • We Need a Substitute
  • We Must Respond
