  • FocusManaging your gift as a good steward of grace.

📖 SCRIPTURE: • 1 Peter 4:7-11

🆚 SPOTLIGHT-VERSE: • 1 Peter 4:10

When you hear the word stewardship what comes to mind?

  • Christian stewardship is broader in scope than finance
  • True stewardship is a serious spiritual matter that must be given priority.

Let’s look at what the Bible says about stewardship, as was written by the first official leader of the early church, Peter the apostle.

Here is what Peter said in 1 Peter 4:10.  📖 “As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” (1 Peter 4:10 New King James Version)

How did we become steward of God’s grace?

=•> We became stewards of God’s grace when the love of God manifested in Jesus Christ transforms our hearts, cleanses us from sin and brings us into the family of God through God’s grace by faith.

▪️️ ‘Since God has given to us his grace, He requires that we administer or respond to it according to his will not, not just for our personal good but also for the benefit of others as we remain accountable to the Lord who owns it’.

  • The believers’ spiritual transformation has a direct impact on their personal management of the gifts of God and life in general.
    • Good stewardship is a reflection of a growing spiritual life.

In 2 Peter 3:18, we’re encouraged to “grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ.”

It is important that we understand that we not only have, saving Grace, but also sustaining Grace.

  • Sustaining Grace is a byproduct of saving grace.
    • “God’s grace justifies us, sanctifies us and will eventually glorify us in heaven”.

While we are here living and ministering on earth we have access to the Grace that justifies, sanctifies and will glorify.

  • Sanctifying Grace helps us become more like Christ in this life, which is synonymous with growing in grace.

How do we grow in grace?

  • Listen to the word of God and let it dwell in you – Colossians 3:16

How do we experience greater levels of this grace?

  • Learn to be humbleJames 4:6
  • Live in submission to God – James 4:7

So, now that it is established that we can grow in grace,

How do we become good steward or managers of Grace.

First, let’s consider what is the scope of our management

  • The scope of good stewardship

According to 🔰 1 Peter 4:10

📖 “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace:” – ‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭4:10‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Varied:- means “many-colored” and referee to the multiple ways we experience God’s grace. (That’s why it’s also translated, manifold – KJV / multifaceted– AMP)

All that we possess falls within the scope of grace hence are included in the ambit of our stewardship.

  • Everything that God blesses you with must be managed according to his will as a good steward of his grace.
  1. What are the standards for an effective steward/managers of Grace.
  • The standard of good stewardship

Scriptures have a standard for an effective steward.

What are the traits needed in order to express good stewardship in the way we use what God entrusted to our care?

1. He must be Good – ‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭4:10‬

=> A good steward seeks excellence and desires to please the master.

2. He must be Faithful‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭4:1-2‬ ‭ESV‬‬

=> “This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful.”

3) He must be WiseLuke 12:42-44;45-47;48

=> “And the Lord said, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom his master will set over his household, to give them their portion of food at the proper time?”

What to expect as a good steward or managers of Grace.

1. Recognize as greatly Blessed – Luke‬ 12:43

  • In Luke‬ 12:43‬ ‭ESV, we see that the result of this kind of stewardship is good. According to Jesus, “Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes.”

2. Rule over a greater Possessions

3. Receive a great Commendation

  • In Matthew 25, we are told such a person will hear, “His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’” ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭25:21‬ ‭ESV‬‬

How can one achieve the standard and live as a good, faithful, and wise steward of the grace of God who experiences these results?

Let’s look at ways of a good stewards of God’s grace as we see in this portion of scripture we’re giving focus to, 1 Peter 4:7-11, and we are able to do it.

A Good Steward of God Grace demonstrates,

  1. Self-control – 1 Peter 4:7a
  2. Sober thinking1 Peter 4:7b
  3. Sincere love1 Peter 4:8
  4. Show hospitality1 Peter 4:9
  • The power to produce these good qualities found in the good steward, comes from God’s grace, and their demonstration is for the glory of God.

“Whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.” 1 Peter‬ ‭4:11‬ ‭ESV‬‬

We live in a time that’s yearning for good stewards.

  • Most importantly, we need to be good stewards of God’s grace, because as Peter puts it in 1 Peter 4:7, “the end of all things is at hand”

👁‍🗨 Good stewards of God’s Grace lives with the end in mind.

Good stewards understand that

  • Our God Given gifts must be used for the good of others.
  • Our God Given gifts must be used for the glory of God.

In Ephesians 3:20, Paul prayed, “For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”

‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭3:14-21‬ ‭ESV‬‬
