Please Excuse Me

October 3, 2021 / John 5:1-18

A multitude of invalids

  • Blind =  blind, physically or
  • Lame = deprived of a foot, limping (Psalm 73:1-3)
  • Paralyzed = , withered

DO YOU WANT TO GET WELL?
Our excuses to Jesus can hinder our encounter with Jesus.

Excuses from preexisting (John 5:5-6)

  • 38 years! That’s a long time to be sick.
  • What about long term spiritual ailments?

Notes:

Excuses from our own (John 5:7)

    • There is no lack of trying. The man has a strategy – but it will never truly heal him.
    • When helping those who are hurting, we often use 2 strategies:
      1. Advocate (help the person)
      2. Activist (fight the system)
      3. Jesus chooses (Isaiah 58:12)

    Notes:

Jesus is greater than our excuses (John 5:8-9)

    • This was the Sabbath, an “appointed time” (Leviticus 23:2)
    • This was an act of freedom
    • “Go and sin no more so nothing worse happens”

    Notes:

    Communion excuses (Luke 14:15-20)
